420 stainless steel has moderate corrosion resistance but is not the preferred choice for seawater, salt spray or high-chloride environments. For those conditions, 316 stainless steel balls are usually more suitable.
420/420C offers a balance of hardness, wear resistance and cost. 440C generally provides higher hardness and wear resistance, but normally costs more. The final choice depends on the required load, corrosion environment and budget.
