Polyoxymethylene (POM), commonly called Acetal or POM resin, is a high-crystallinity engineering thermoplastic with the trademark name Delrin® (DuPont), Celcon®, Ultraform®, Duracon®, etc. POM balls are manufactured from 100% virgin POM resin through precision injection molding or CNC turning, with diameters ranging from 1mm to 60mm and accuracy grades from G0 to G3.
| Key Advantage | Performance | Compared to PA, PP, PTFE Balls |
|---|---|---|
| Outstanding Wear Resistance | Extremely low friction coefficient, self-lubricating | Far better than Nylon & PP |
| High Strength & Stiffness | Tensile strength ≥70 MPa | 30-50% stronger than common plastics |
| Excellent Dimensional Stability | Water absorption <0.2%, heat deflection up to 160°C | Almost unaffected by humidity |
| Superior Chemical Resistance | Resistant to most acids, alkalis, solvents | Slightly inferior to PTFE but much cheaper |
| Long Fatigue Life | Withstands millions of cycles | Ideal for high-frequency motion |
Precision bearings & linear guides (laptops, drawer slides, medical carts)
Ball valves, metering pumps & food-grade fluid control
Automotive parts (seat belt components, throttle cables, wipers)
Medical devices (syringe plungers, endoscope transmission balls)
Consumer electronics (phone camera focus beads, drone gimbal bearings)
New energy vehicles & robotics – demand for POM balls expected to grow 35%+ in 2025
Resin Brand: DuPont Delrin®, BASF Ultraform®, Celanese Celcon®, Mitsubishi Duracon®
Grade Accuracy: G1 or better (lower number = higher precision)
Surface Finish: Ra ≤ 0.05 μm is ideal
Color: Pure white without black spots = virgin material
Certifications: FDA, RoHS, REACH, USP Class VI (medical grade)
1. What are precision plastic balls?
Precision plastic balls are solid spheres made from engineering polymers with extremely tight tolerances (usually G0–G3 grade), roundness ≤0.005–0.050 mm, and diameter tolerance ±0.01–0.05 mm. They are used where metal balls are too heavy, noisy, corrosive or expensive.
2. Which materials are most commonly used for precision plastic balls?
| Material | Other Names | Best For | Max Continuous Temp |
|---|---|---|---|
| POM | Acetal, Delrin | Highest strength & wear resistance | 120°C |
| PA66 / PA6 | Nylon | Good toughness, moderate cost | 100–120°C |
| PP | Polypropylene | Chemical resistance, floating balls | 100°C |
| PTFE | Teflon | Extreme chemical & heat resistance | 260°C |
| PEEK | - | Highest temperature & chemical | 250°C |
| PC | Polycarbonate | Transparency, impact resistance | 120°C |
| ABS | - | Low cost, general purpose | 80°C |
| UHMWPE | - | Ultra-low friction, food contact | 80°C |
3. POM ball = Acetal ball = Delrin ball?
Yes, 100%. POM is the chemical name (Polyoxymethylene). Acetal is the common English name. Delrin® is DuPont’s trademark. All refer to exactly the same material.
4. Can plastic balls replace steel balls 1:1?
Load: plastic balls support 5–20% of steel load
Speed: plastic can run faster without lubrication
Temperature: >130°C must use PEEK or PTFE
Chemical environment: plastic wins Typical replacement ratio: 1 steel ball → 3–8 plastic balls (same diameter)
