If you have quoted both grades recently, you already know the pattern: 420 stainless steel balls usually come in 20% to 40% below 440C balls of the same diameter and precision grade.  The gap is real, and it is not a quality trick. It comes down to raw material cost, heat treatment time, and how long each grade takes to grind and lap. For a large share of applications, check valves, sprayer pumps, low-load bearings, hardware, 420 does the job, and the extra money buys nothing you will ever notice in service.

Why Are 420 Stainless Steel Balls Cheaper Than 440C?

Raw material:440C wire and bar stock carries more chromium and far more carbon, with tighter melt control. The steel costs more per ton before we cut the first slug.

Heat treatment440C hardens at a higher austenitizing temperature and, to control retained austenite, usually gets a sub-zero (deep freeze) treatment plus double tempering. That means extra furnace time, extra cryogenic cycles, extra energy per batch. 420 takes a simpler quench-and-temper cycle.

Grinding and lappingThis is the cost driver buyers rarely see. At HRC 58 and above, material removal slows down and abrasive wheels wear out faster. Lapping a 440C ball to grade G10 or G16 simply takes longer per thousand pieces than lapping 420 to the same grade. Machine hours are money.

Scrap rateHigh-carbon martensite is less forgiving. Quench micro-cracks show up more often in 440C, so rejection at final inspection runs higher, and that cost is baked into every quoted price.

Add these up and the gap widens as diameters get larger and precision grades get tighter. On small commodity sizes at G100 the difference may be modest; on large balls at G16 it is significant.

420 Stainless Steel Ball Hardness vs 440C

Hardened 420 stainless steel balls typically measure HRC 50-55. 440C reaches HRC 58-62 after heat treatment, which is bearing-steel territory. In practice this means a 440C ball resists indentation (brinelling) and rolling-contact fatigue better under sustained load. But if your ball just sits and seals, or moves a few times a minute, that extra hardness is idle capacity you paid for.

420 vs 440C Corrosion Resistance: The Honest Answer

On paper 440C carries more chromium (16-18% vs 12-14%), so you might expect clearly better corrosion resistance. Reality is more even. Much of 440C's chromium gets tied up in hard chromium carbides during heat treatment. Those carbides are exactly what make it wear-resistant, but carbide formation pulls chromium out of the surrounding matrix, where it would otherwise be fighting rust. The result: both grades land in the same moderate corrosion class. Both should be passivated. Both handle fresh water, steam, air, oils, fuels, and mild chemical media well. Neither belongs in seawater, chloride-rich, or aggressive acid service; that is 316 stainless steel ball territory.


Magnetic Properties of 420 and 440C Stainless Steel Balls

Both grades are magnetic. That surprises buyers who assume stainless means non-magnetic; only austenitic grades like 304 and 316 are (mostly) non-magnetic. A detail almost nobody mentions: 420 has somewhat higher magnetic permeability than 440C, so a magnet grips it more strongly. If your design uses a magnet to hold or actuate the ball, as in some magnetic check valves and sensor assemblies, 420 is the better choice, not just the cheaper one.

Toughness: Why 420 Stainless Steel Balls Handle Impact Better

Lower carbon makes 420 the tougher of the two. Under impact or shock loading it deforms slightly rather than chipping. 440C, being harder, is more brittle, and drop loads or edge impacts are where it can crack. For applications with vibration and impact rather than smooth rolling, 420's toughness is a genuine advantage, not a compromise.

When 420 Stainless Steel Balls Are Fine: Typical Applications

Check valves and pump valve balls in water, air, oil, fuel, and mild chemical media. The ball seats, seals, lifts, reseats. Loads are low, cycles are gentle, and HRC 50+ is far more than the job needs. This is the single largest use of the 420 balls we ship. 

Low-load, low-speed bearings: casters, furniture slides, conveyor rollers, bicycle headsets, hand tools. Rolling-contact fatigue only becomes the limiting factor at sustained speed and load. These applications never get there.

Sprayer pumps, dispensers, and aerosol valves:Millions of trigger-sprayer check balls run on 420. If the media is not chloride-heavy, a 420 ball outlasts the product it sits in.

Locks, latches, detents, and hardware:The ball clicks into a groove a few thousand times over years. Hardness beyond HRC 50 adds nothing here.

Decorative and light structural uses :where you want a hard, polishable, rust-resistant sphere at the lowest cost.


When 440C Stainless Steel Balls Are Worth the Extra Cost

Precision bearings under sustained load and speed:Rolling-contact fatigue life scales strongly with hardness. For spindles, motors, and instrument bearings that run continuously, 440C's HRC 58+ pays for itself in service life.

Abrasive or high-cycle service:Metering valves cycling millions of times, media with suspended particles, anywhere the ball surface is being actively worn down.

Drawings and standards that specify it:If the print says 440C, HRC ≥58, or references bearing-ball standards, supply what is specified. Substituting 420 to save cost on a specced part is how warranty claims start.

Hard-to-service locations:When replacing a failed ball means a technician visit or a production stop, the ball price is noise. Buy the longer-lived grade.

420 or 440C Stainless Steel Balls: 5 Questions Before You Buy

  1. Is the ball in continuous rolling contact under load? Yes: lean 440C. No: 420.

  2. Does the drawing explicitly call out a grade or HRC ≥58? Yes: 440C, no debate.

  3. Is the media chloride-rich, marine, or acidic? Yes: neither. Look at 316 or higher alloys.

  4. Is the ball magnet-actuated? Yes: 420 grips a magnet better.

  5. Is replacement cheap and easy? Yes: the savings on 420 compound across every unit you build.

Passivated 420 balls resist fresh water, steam, oils, and mild chemicals well. They are not suitable for seawater or chloride-heavy media; use 316 for that.
